The Jean Monnet (hereinafter, referred to as JM) Chair is one of the Jean Monnet Actions (http://ec.europa.eu/education/opportunities/jean-monnet/index_en.htm), integrated into Erasmus+ Programme 2014-2020. The main purpose of the JM Chair is to promote studies and research on European issues, encouraging the deep thinking on European integration. On the other hand, the JM Chairs bring the academic circle and professional society closer. For this purpose the professors with high specialization in European integration studies are awarded by the JM Chairs.
The JM Chair at the University of the Basque Country / Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea (hereinafter, referred to as UPV/EHU), was granted by the European Commission, (EACEA: http://eacea.ec.europa.eu/index_en.php), last July 2014. The professor Juan Ignacio Ugartemendia Eceizabarrena was recognized as holder of this JM Chair. The principal Project of the Chair, co- financed by Erasmus+ programme and UPV/EHU, is named “La tutela judicial de los derechos fundamentales en el Espacio de Libertad, Seguridad y Justicia (ELSJ) / The judicial protection of the fundamental rights in the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice (AFSJ)” (Ref. 553187-EPP-1-2014-1-ES-EPPJMO-CHAIR).
The main objectives of the present JM Chair is promotion of different activities in areas of research which are carried out by the holder of the JM Chair, within the area of Constitutional law and European Union law. Juan Ignacio Ugartemendia Eceizabarrena takes part in these research areas as a professor of subjects in Degree studies, as well as professor and director of postgraduate Master’s Degree in Political Integration and Economic Union in the European Union. The JM holder is director of different PhD theses related to the European issues. The JM Chair grant permits to the holder to strengthen the activity that he has been spread out for years, as the organization of courses, conferences, workshops, and seminars on topics related to European Union. These activities may be addressed to open and expand the existing activities in this area, to reach more people interested in, to increase the level of excellence, to provide more opportunities for professionals and for academic circle, to promote and develop such learning, research and training activities using the current IT tools, to promote innovation and to attract more students, researchers and professionals to access of more and more qualified knowledge
For this purpose and in this framework many (classroom or online) activities have been proposed. These activities pretend to help and expand greatly the European Union image generally, and the activities pretend to aim the construction of the AFSJ “according to” the Fundamental Rights, particularly. These activities would promote the necessary critical debate regarding the current issues and problems in the field of AFSJ, and as well due to the lack of regulation in this area. Without a doubt, the online dimension of learning of many of the activities mentioned above will encourage the wider spreading of them and may contribute to make a broader impact on their results.
Juan Ignacio Ugartemendia is Professor, Accredited as ¨Catedrático¨ of Constitutional Law and European Union law at UPV/EHU. Author of numerous publications, he has been participated in several projects and groups of investigation financed to research in the issues on the present JM Chair. The holder of the JM Chair is Director of the Master’s in “Political Integration and Economic Union in the European Union” at UPV/EHU and the Director of the PhD programme in “Political Integration and Economic Union in the European Union”, imparted at the same university. To promote the objectives of this JM Chair, the holder will also collaborate with a group of professors and lectures, some of them also holders of JM Chair, due to his collaboration with these professionals regularly on various research and teaching activities.
